To add a Google font to a Genesis Child theme you will be working in the Functions.php and style sheets. If you do not do this correctly, you will cause your site to go blank and will need to fix the function.php file via your File Manager, cpanel, or SFTP/FTP.
Step 1 – Pick Your Font
Go to the Google Fonts website and find a font. For this tutorial we are using DM Serif Display. Once you have picked out the font you want, click the + button to select the font. Under “Embed Font” you will need the bold wording (highlighted in blue), and then also the Specify in CSS part.
Step 2 – Add it to the functions.php file
This is the part that if you do not do correctly, will cause your site to go blank. Most Genesis themes are already using Google Fonts. So you will want to find the line in the functions.php file that looks something like this
wp_enqueue_style( 'hyd-google-fonts', '//fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Montserrat:400,700|Poppins|Trirong', array());
As you can see the theme this is from is using Montserrat, Poppins, and Trirong. We are going to change out the Montserrat font for the DM Serif Display. To do this, we would take the name of the font that is in Bold above DM+Serif+Display and paste it exactly as it is over the Montserrat:400,700
wp_enqueue_style( 'hyd-google-fonts', '//fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=DM+Serif+Display|Poppins|Trirong', array());
Be sure not to remove anything other than the font. If you did not want to replace a font, and instead add one. Then you would add the DM+Serif+Display after Trirong and separate it with a | like this example below
wp_enqueue_style( 'hyd-google-fonts', '//fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Montserrat:400,700|Poppins|Trirong|DM+Serif+Display', array());
Save the change and then go to your Style Sheet.
Step 3 – Add it to the Style Sheet
Now that you have added the Google Font to your theme file in the functions.php file, you are ready to add it to your style sheet. Scroll through your style sheet and find the font you want to change out.
And then replace the Font Family line with your new Font Family.
Click save and if you did everything correctly your new font will now show in place of the old font. Be sure to clear your hosting cache and browser cache if you are not seeing the change.
